Everyone feels guilty now and then. It is a natural and appropriate response when you do something that goes against your values. Your conscience makes you feel uncomfortable so you can adjust your behavior in the future accordingly. This type of guilt is healthy and normal.

Unhealthy guilt occurs when you blame yourself for things that are not your responsibility or things you cannot possibly control. It is not your responsibility to make your spouse happy, make sure the kids are always entertained, or fix your best friend's relationship.
